MEDIA NOTICE - ‘Mehmet Akif’ College fined for violation of privacy

The Basic Court in Pristina, according to the findings of the inspection conducted by the Agency, fined 'Mehmet Akif' College to € 12,000 for violation of privacy through camera surveillance.
At the request of the National Agency for the Protection of Personal Data, initiated on 05 May 2016, for initiating a minor offence procedure against “Mehmet Akif” College, on 09 February 2018, the Minor Offense Division of the Basic Court in Prishtina imposed a fine of € 12,000 for unlawful processing of personal data through the camera surveillance system in areas where the installation of cameras is not allowed.
Agency officials, during the inspection conducted in May 2016, had found that this college had installed cameras in work areas, such as offices, classrooms and sanitary facilities (college toilets).
This way of personal data processing through camera surveillance is in violation of the provisions of Articles 62 and 64 of the Law on the Protection of Personal Data and as such constitutes a violation of the privacy of an individual.
It is worth noting that camera surveillance is only allowed if it is considered necessary for the safety of people and the security of property, and only in the entrances to the buildings, but not in the interior of the work areas, much less in sanitary facilities, i.e. toilets.
