The Agency for Information and Privacy marks the International Data Protection Day with the slogan, “Protect personal data today, for a secure tomorrow.”

During today’s conference for the launch of the first platform in Kosovo to identify personal data breaches, in her opening speech, the Commissioner for Information and Privacy, Ms. Krenare Sogojeva Dërmaku, announced that with dedication and high seriousness, the Agency has achieved the status of an observer member in the European Data Protection Board (EDPB), the highest European authority on data protection standards. “This advancement enables us to have direct access to the most advanced European policies and standards, influencing our professionalism, increasing trust, and strengthening Kosovo’s position in the international arena,” said Commissioner Dërmaku.
Regarding the Agency’s achievements, the Commissioner emphasized the Agency’s multidimensional efforts in raising awareness among public and private controllers about the importance of personal data protection. These efforts include organizing over 200 informational and awareness-raising activities, issuing 311 decisions, conducting 324 inspections in both public and private sectors, and publishing 6 guidelines on personal data protection.
The Deputy Head of Mission of the United States to Kosovo, Mr. Rahan Hill, emphasized the importance of personal data protection as an essential component of cybersecurity. “Cybercrimes do not recognize geographical boundaries and represent a global threat. For this reason, the U.S. Embassy, through the Department of Justice (INL), has supported the Agency in implementing a mechanism to identify data breaches and ensure the protection of public information,” he stated.
Meanwhile, the Deputy Ambassador of Croatia to Kosovo, Mr. Nedjelko Spilek, praised the bilateral cooperation between Kosovo and Croatia, highlighting the importance of promoting European standards for personal data protection. “Croatia is committed to sharing its experience and knowledge with Kosovo, strengthening cooperation between our institutions, and advancing the implementation of the highest European standards for privacy protection,” said Mr. Spilek.
The Director of the Department for Personal Data Protection at AIP, Mr. Arbian Arifi, presented the legal obligations of public and private institutions, emphasizing the role of officials in protecting personal data and building professional capacities to implement the law in line with technological developments.
Following this, Mr. Erblind Morina from Sense Cyber Research presented the platform for securing personal data protection through the identification of data breaches by public and private controllers. “This platform will significantly improve the implementation of the personal data protection law and serve as a preventive mechanism against potential data misuse,” stated Mr. Morina.
The event marked an important moment for emphasizing the role of international cooperation and technological innovation in Kosovo in strengthening personal data protection, contributing to a safer future for the citizens and institutions of Kosovo.
