The Information and Privacy Agency requires citizens to respect the law when placing cameras on private property

July 8, 2024, Pristina
The Information and Privacy Agency, within the measures for the protection of personal data of the citizens of the Republic of Kosovo, calls on all persons who decide to install surveillance cameras in private facilities to have in mind the criteria for the protection of privacy and security measures.
IPA has received a significant number of complaints from citizens about camera surveillance in private facilities (homes and collective housing) outside the criteria defined by the legislation for the protection of personal data. Addressed complaints in some cases have resulted in the violation of citizens’ privacy as they observed outside the parameters of private property, including foreign private property and public spaces.
The Information and Privacy Agency urges all citizens who have installed camera systems to ensure that the cameras only monitor and record their own property and not public spaces or neighbours’ property.
When the camera is installed, the citizens are obliged to place signs announcing the presence of the cameras, to store the recordings safely, protecting them from unauthorized access, as well as to store the recordings for a reasonable period of time, not more than 30 days.
Compliance with these criteria helps protect the privacy of all citizens of the Republic of Kosovo.
